Holiday in Delhi

 

Delhi, the capital city of India, is the most important and famous historical city of India. Delhi is divided into two parts, the Old Delhi and New Delhi, contrasting yet harmonious in nature. Places to Visit
Qutab Minar: It is a 72.5 m tall tower, built by Qutab-ud-din Aibak, a famous king of the Delhi Sultanate in the end of 12th century. It's complex also houses India's first mosque, the Quwatul Islam and an ancient iron pillar of the 5th century AD. The iron pillar is unique in its character, as it has never been rusted since it was built.

Red Fort: The Red Fort or Lal Qila as it's popularly known, was built by the famous Mughal emperor Shah Jehan who also built the world famous Taj Mahal. The marvelous red sandstone Fort, situated on the banks of river Yamuna is one of the finest masterpieces of the Indo-Islamic Architecture.

Jama Masjid: Another architectural masterpiece creation of the Mughal emperor Shah Jehan, Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India. Built in red sandstone, the mosque is located just opposite of the Red Fort.

National Zoological Park: Adjacent to Purana Qila is located the Delhi Zoo. The zoo is home to a wide variety of animals numbering more than 2,000 and also a famous picnic spot for Delhites.

Humayun's Tomb: A World Heritage site by UNESCO, built by Humayun's wife in the mid 16th century, Humayun's Tomb is one of the finest example of the Indo-Islamic architecture.

Parliament House: The circular structure is one of the finest examples of the British architectural richness. It is located in the heart of the city on the left of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Rashtrapati Bhavan: A marvelous cream and red sandstone building is the official residence of the President of India. The famous Mughal Gardens is situated in the premises of this beautiful British structure.

India Gate: The 42 m high gate structure was built in memory of the thousands of Indians who died in World War I. Just in front of the gate is the eternal flame (Amar Jawan Jyoti), which is always lighted.

Lotus Temple: The lotus shaped beautiful temple belonging to the Bahai faith, is open to people belonging to all faiths of the world.

Agra is world famous for its magnificent, majestic and marvelous Taj Mahal, perhaps the finest architectural monument in the world. The city of Agra has a rich political and cultural past of more than 500 years. But, it was the Mughal period during which the city reached its zenith. Akbar, one of the greatest emperors of India, made Agra his capital city in 1565 AD. In the following years he started the construction of the Agra Fort on the banks of the river Yamuna. During his period Agra emerged as the India's most famous center of art, culture and commerce and learning. The trend continued during the Mughal rule and reached its zenith during the Shah Jehan's period. Various wonderful architectural masterpieces such as the magnificent Taj Mahal, the Agra Fort, Bulund Darwaza at Fatehpur Sikri, the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah etc. represent the glorious past of the Mughal period (when Agra was the capital city of India) .

 

Places to Visit
Taj Mahal: One of the seven wonders in the world, the Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jehan as a symbol of love to his beloved wife Mumtaz, who died at an early age of 32. Built entirely of white marble, it's the greatest masterpiece of Indo- Islamic Architecture. The stunning beauty of the Taj can't be described in words.

Agra Fort: Built by Akbar in the year 1565, this magnificent red sandstone fort was the seat of the Mughal Empire during the reigns of three Mughal emperors, Akbar, Jehangir and Shah Jehan. Within the Fort you can view the Diwan-e-Am, the Diwan-e-Khas, the Pearl Mosque, the Nagina Masjid, the Palace of Mirrors to name a few, which reflect the richness of Mughal architectural styles. Other attractions in and around Agra are the Tomb of Itimad-ud - Daulah, which is famous as baby Taj and known to have interiors and inlay work more beautiful than of Taj. Fatehpur Sikri, known as the ghost town, is famous for Bulund Darwaza, the largest gateway in the world, and the tomb of famous Sufi saint Shaikh Salim Chisti.

Besides magnificent monuments, the city of Agra is a shopper's paradise too. You can shop for the small replicas of Taj carved out of white Marble, which can be used as a decorative, gift item or as souvenirs. Agra is also famous for the leather items including leather sandals and shoes, purses, bags, decorative items and many more such leather product that instantaneously attracts your attention. The shops also sell brass decorative pieces and stone carved images. Agra is also famous for the Zari and embroidery work.

By Air: There is a well-maintained airport at Kheria located 7 km from the city center Agra, which has all the major domestic airlines having their services to the city of Taj.

Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan, is popularly known as the pink city of India. The historical city of Jaipur was founded in 1727 AD by the astronomer king Sawai Jai Singh. One of the most well-preserved cities of India, Jaipur has the distinction of being the first scientifically planned city in India, built on the basis of principles laid down in the Shilpa Shastra, the ancient Indian treatise on architecture. The city is rectangular in shape and divided into nine blocks with wide straight avenues, roads, streets and lanes and has uniform rows of shops on either side at the main bazaar.

The City Palace: Located in the center of the old city, it is the official residence of the royal family. The magnificent palace houses a museum named after a former king Maharaja Sawai Man Singh. The museum displays a rich collection of Rajasthani costumes and arms of the Mughals and Rajputs. The most impressive of all collections are the rare astronomical works in Arabic, Persian, Latin and Sanskrit acquired by Sawai Jai Singh II.

Hawa Mahal: The palace of winds commonly known as the Hawa Mahal is a five-storied building along the main street with semi octagonal and honey combed windows made of sandstone. The beautiful palace was built in 1799 AD for the ladies of the royal household to watch the royal processions and daily hustle-bustle of the city.

Jantar Mantar: Sawai Jai Singh, the astronomical king, built an observatory of stone known as Jantar Mantar. It has numerous scientifically designed instruments. The Ram Yantras is the most remarkable of all the instruments and used for gauging altitudes.

Ram Niwas Bagh: It was built as a famine relief project by Sawai Ram Singh II in 1868 AD. It houses a well-kept spacious garden with a zoo, an aviary, a greenhouse, a herbarium, a museum and popular sport ground.

Other major attractions at Jaipur include Amber Fort, Sheesh Mahal, Jaigarh Fort, Amer Palace, Govind Devji Temple, Galtaji and Sisodia Rani Garden.
